Following a competition launched by the European Centre for the Development of Vocational Training (Cedefop), the Directorate of Secondary Technical and Vocational Education and Training (DMEET) of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth has been appointed as the National Coordinator of the European Network ReferNet in Cyprus for the period 2024-2027.

ReferNet was established by Cedefop in 2002 as the European reference and expertise network for vocational education and training, providing information on national vocational education and training (VET) systems and policies in the EU Member States, Iceland and Norway. It is worth noting that each National Coordinator is a key organisation involved in VET in the country they represent. As such, all Coordinators are able to offer first-hand information on the role, purpose, governance and structure of VET, information on developments and trends in VET policies, as well as in-depth analysis of how each country is progressing in implementing the common European policy.

The coordination, management and promotion of the European Network ReferNet in Cyprus includes the preparation of reports on VET policies in Cyprus, the preparation of a monograph on the national VET system, the dissemination and promotion of ReferNet activities in Cyprus and the management of the ReferNet Cyprus Consortium.

It is worth noting that the strengthening of European cooperation in the field of vocational education and training dates back to 2002 and the Copenhagen process. Over the years it has been further strengthened, both by the Bruges Communiqué and the Riga conclusions. At the same time, VET has been identified as a priority area for cooperation in the framework of the European Education Area for the period 2021-2030.
