The Director General of the Ministry of Interior, Dr. Elikkos Ilias, gave a first briefing on the Elections of Local Authorities, School Board Members and Members of the European Parliament 2024 to representatives of political parties.
The meeting, which was held this morning at the "Theophilos Georgiades" Press and Information Office Amphitheatre, aimed to provide information on the upcoming elections to be held on Sunday 9 June 2024, explaining, among other things, the changes that have taken place in the electoral system due to the reform of Local Government, the types of elections, the electoral rolls, the number of ballot papers, etc.The Director-General stated that on the above date, eight elections will be held simultaneously, namely: the election of Mayors, Deputy Mayors, Municipal Councillors, Community Mayors, Members of Community Councils, Presidents of Provincial Local Authorities, Members of School Boards and Members of the European Parliament.

Speaking about the elections for Local Government Authorities, the Director General said that a new administrative map has been created as part of the Local Government Reform, which includes three types of Authorities: municipalities, municipal districts and communities. All citizens of the Republic and nationals of other Member States of the European Union have the right to vote, provided they have reached the age of 18 and are registered in the electoral roll of the municipality, municipal district or community concerned, he explained. Displaced voters vote, both on the basis of their place of residence and place of displacement, at special polling stations for displaced voters in each Province, Dr. Elias added.
As far as the mayoral districts are concerned, the Director General informed that citizens will vote for the election of Mayors, Deputy Mayors, Chairpersons of Provincial Self-Government Organizations, Members of School Boards and Members of the European Parliament, while as far as Communities are concerned, they will vote for the election of Community Mayors, Members of Community Councils, Chairpersons of Provincial Self-Government Organizations and Members of the European Parliament.
Dr Elias stressed the necessity of cooperation between the Ministry of Interior, the political parties and the candidates, noting that these elections are expected to be among the most challenging and complex in the history of the Republic of Cyprus. Stressing the importance of mutual information and dialogue with the Ministry of Interior, he called on everyone to cooperate for the success of this process.
The Director General concluded by noting that similar briefings will continue both to the representatives of political parties and to the mass media, with the aim of transferring information to the general public, which will be invited to participate in the 2024 elections.
The Director General was accompanied by the Head of the Directorate of Local Government, Prefect Antonis Economides and the Head of the Election Service, Mr. Menelaos Vasileiou.
