The Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy organised today, at the Leventis Gallery, a conference on "Artificial Intelligence as a factor in creating growth prospects".
The keynote speaker was Professor Chrysostomos Nikias, President Emeritus of the University of Southern California, who focused on the potential of AI and the challenges that accompany it.
As Professor Nikias explained, AI has existed before, it has simply now expanded into all facets of human life as the vast amount of data now available, through tools such as ChatGPT, has opened up other perspectives. At the same time, free access to inexhaustible sources of information poses risks and raises ethical dilemmas in terms of intellectual property rights, plagiarism and misinformation.
Referring specifically to Cyprus, the Professor said that the country has made leaps and bounds in terms of technology and has become a technological hub in the Eastern Mediterranean region. At the same time, however, he pointed out the gap in terms of STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) expertise and the very small number of women employed in STEM professions in Cyprus.
During the roundtable discussions that followed, the panellists referred, among others, to the applications of AI in the fields of education, work, health, energy and crisis management.
In his intervention at the close of the conference, Deputy Minister of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy Mr. Filippos Hadjizaharias said that the digital transformation of the state requires the use of smart technological tools such as artificial intelligence. He stressed, however, the need for a thorough examination of the challenges that exist and the establishment of a legislative framework for the rational use of artificial intelligence.
