The Deputy Minister of Culture Dr Vasiliki Kassianidou visited the Famagusta District as part of a series of visits to museums and monuments in order to address conservation problems of the ecclesiastical monuments of Cyprus, as well as the promotion of new cultural routes in the region.

At the invitation of the Metropolitan of Kostantia - Famagusta, Mr. Vasilios, a visit to the Medieval Monastery of Agia Napa took place in order to monitor the maintenance works, as well as the developments regarding the conversion of the Monastery of Agia Napa into a museum site. As the Deputy Minister was informed, in the presence of the Mayor of Ayia Napa, Mr. Christos Zannettos, the Municipality of Ayia Napa, in cooperation with the Department of Antiquities, will implement the last phase of the works at the Monastery with the aim of completing the project within a few months.

The Deputy Minister pointed out that important frescoes are preserved in this unique monument, the conservation of which is being undertaken by the Department of Antiquities in cooperation with the Holy Metropolis of Constantia - Famagusta. In the context of the works, archaeological remains have also been identified, which will be highlighted through a museological study to be carried out in cooperation with the Department of Antiquities.

In a subsequent discussion with the Mayor of Ayia Napa at the Town Hall, issues concerning the promotion of the cultural wealth of the region were discussed, including monuments or sites of archaeological interest that have recently come to light following research or rescue excavations.

The Deputy Minister visited two more ecclesiastical monuments that are being implemented by the Department of Antiquities in the framework of the conservation and enhancement of the monuments. Specifically, she visited the Church of St. Marina of Frenarus, a Schedule B Ancient Monument dating back to the 15th-16th century, which so far is not accessible to the public, as it has static problems caused by recent earthquakes. In order to restore the monument, a study has been carried out, on which the restoration of the monument will be based. The Deputy Minister, in the presence of the relevant officials of the Department of Antiquities and the Community Council, assured that with the completion of the excavations that highlighted the history of the monument, immediate action will be taken in order to implement the necessary works as soon as possible.

He then visited the Church of the Transfiguration of the Saviour at Sotira Famagusta, which preserves 13th century frescoes that had deteriorated to a great extent due to the dampness in the building. The Department of Antiquities undertook the restoration and maintenance of the frescoes and the aim is to complete the relevant cleaning within 2024. By covering 50% of the costs for the maintenance of church monuments, the state is supporting the work of communities and the Church. The aim, she continued, is to strengthen as much as possible the efforts to preserve our cultural heritage.

Finally, the Deputy Minister visited the Hatzigiorkis Mills Museum, a local museum that aims to highlight and promote Cyprus' agricultural heritage. She congratulated the company for the initiative to create this museum, for conducting educational programmes that attract a large number of schools, as well as the excellent cooperation between the museum and the Ministry of Tourism within the framework of the Heartland of Legends.

The Deputy Minister, after a tour of the Museum's premises, highlighted the role played by local museums in promoting our cultural heritage and the actions promoted by the Deputy Ministry to upgrade and update the various support schemes offered to these institutions. Efforts are being made to support local museums either by promoting tax incentives to support these cultural institutions or by covering their operating or other costs in order to achieve their objectives.
