The Deputy Minister of Culture Dr. Vasiliki Kassianidou met today with the President Mr. Andreas Kitromilides and the Secretary Mr. Nikola Stylianou of the Union of Cyprus Communities at the Deputy Ministry of Culture. During the meeting, issues of concern to the communities were discussed, such as the need to create conditions to address homelessness.
Mr. Kitromilides highlighted the importance of the Government's policies towards the development of mountain communities and rural areas, including the housing policy being promoted. He said that these policies, in combination with actions by the Deputy Ministry of Culture and other relevant Ministries, can create an integrated development framework that will keep communities alive.
The President of the Union of Cyprus Communities referred to the Cultural Decentralization Programme recently announced by the Deputy Ministry of Culture, which aims, among other things, to financially support activities that promote culture in the countryside, noting that it has been improved, thus offering better prospects for the development of rural communities.
The Deputy Minister of Culture expressed the intention of the Deputy Ministry of Culture to take all necessary steps to ensure that the Cultural Decentralisation Programme is used and implemented by more communities. The Deputy Ministry of Culture, Dr. Kassianidou noted, aims to further promote the implementation of the programme throughout the year in order to attract visitors to these areas all year round.
In addition, it was agreed to hold provincial meetings in February to inform community representatives about the existing programmes of the Deputy Ministry from which they can benefit, as well as support for the submission of applications for cultural activities. This will allow better use of resources and the organisation of higher quality cultural events to attract audiences in mountainous and rural areas.
Finally, it was decided to continue the cooperation between the Ministry of State and the Union of Cyprus Communities in order to promote and exploit the museums and libraries that exist in the communities but face low attendance. Through the organisation of activities, such as literacy events, the aim is to attract visitors on the one hand and to develop and promote cultural education and the promotion of the culture and tradition of the country on the other.
