April 18 was established in 1983 by UNESCO as the International Day of Monuments and Sites, following a proposal by the International Council on Monuments and Sites (ICOMOS). To commemorate this important day, with the ultimate aim of raising awareness of the importance of culture in society, a different theme is promoted each year, which becomes the occasion for the organisation of events and various activities, with the participation of citizens, so that they can come into direct contact with and become familiar with all aspects of the country's cultural heritage.

In the framework of the general guidelines of ICOMOS International, the Department of Antiquities celebrates this year's day under the theme "Rescuing Monuments from Conflicts and Disasters. Venice Charter 1964-2024". As every year, admission to archaeological sites and monuments on 18 April will be free of charge for all visitors. The main event of the Department of Antiquities will be the inauguration of the transformation of the archaeological site of Paphos Gate, which will be celebrated by the Deputy Minister of Culture on 22 April, while other planned events mainly concern educational activities at monuments and sites with the main objective of familiarizing young people with our cultural heritage, as well as a music event, which will take place in Palaipafos on 11 May. The Department of Antiquities is also co-organising an event of the Cyprus Section of ICOMOS, which will take place on Friday 19 April at its premises.
