The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs of the House of Representatives, Mr. Harris Georgiades, had a meeting today with the new Ambassador of Poland to Cyprus, Mr. Marek Szczepanowski.
During the meeting, the historic ties of friendship and cooperation that link the two countries and the common will to further deepen them, both at the parliamentary, business and cultural levels, were underlined.
Mr Georgiades referred to Cyprus' efforts to strengthen regional security and stability, stressing the relations of friendship and cooperation with the countries of the region. An important exception, he said, is Turkey, which not only refuses to contribute to peace efforts in the region, but also undermines any efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem. Szczepanowski reaffirmed Poland's firm principled position on the Cyprus problem and expressed the hope that the appointment of a Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General would strengthen the prospects for resuming negotiations and finding a solution.
The Polish Ambassador expressed his appreciation for the stabilizing role of Cyprus in the Eastern Mediterranean region, making special reference to the Cypriot initiative for the creation of a humanitarian corridor to Gaza. In this context, he expressed his country's readiness to provide all possible assistance in this direction.
Finally, they exchanged views on issues of common interest, in particular on the current situation in Ukraine and the Middle East.
