The Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Foreign and European Affairs and Chairman of the Cyprus-Malta Friendship Group, Mr Harris Georgiades, today had an online meeting with the Chairman of the Malta-Cyprus Friendship Group in the Parliament of Malta, Mr Carmelo Abela. The meeting was also attended by the member of the Group, MP Mr Stanley Zammit.

Mr Georgiades thanked the Parliament of Malta for the initiative of this first meeting, following the establishment of respective Friendship Groups in the two Parliaments last April. Mr Georgiades underlined the historical and friendly ties between Cyprus and Malta and the close cooperation that the two countries have developed on the basis of their common characteristics as small island Mediterranean Member States of the European Union (EU). Georgiades, our two countries face common challenges, which require coordinated action.

Abela praised the strong ties between the two countries and their similar positions on many issues, as a result of their common Euro-Mediterranean identity and their status as EU and Commonwealth Member States.

The meeting underlined the common will to further strengthen the dialogue between the two Parliaments on a wide range of issues of common interest, in particular at the level of the respective Friendship Groups, for the purpose of exchange of views and coordination, and decided on the next steps to be taken. The growing momentum of parliamentary diplomacy to address the multiple challenges facing Europe today was noted, with particular reference to the ongoing war in Ukraine, the explosive situation in the Middle East, the migration crisis and terrorism. Georgiades underlined the urgent need to maintain and strengthen the EU's presence, economically and politically, in the wider region, so as not to leave a security vacuum that could be filled by extremist elements. In this context, the very essential role of the EU in ensuring peace and stability in the Mediterranean region and the need for issues of concern to the Mediterranean member states to be permanently high on the EU's agenda were stressed.
