Recognising the need for further protection of stray animals, the Council of Ministers today approved a special Plan to support Local Authorities (LAs) to develop appropriate regional temporary shelters for stray dogs. The proposed Plan aims to financially support partnerships between local authorities to develop regional temporary shelters for stray dogs in each Province, in accordance with the requirements of the Animal Protection and Welfare Regulations.

To implement the Plan, the total expenditure will amount to €1,500,000 for the period 2022-2024. The operation of these shelters will focus on the adoption of stray dogs, while their minimum capacity will allow for the effective management of stray animals at a regional level.

The right to apply for participation in the Project will be granted to ATA partnerships which must include, according to defined criteria, a minimum number of municipalities or communities in order to ensure the regional character of the shelter and the public benefit function of the site. According to the Plan, the Provincial Administrations will be responsible for monitoring the implementation of the projects by the local authorities, while the Veterinary Services will be responsible for approving the specifications of the premises to ensure that the requirements of animal welfare legislation are met.
