Statements by the Minister of Interior Mr. Constantine Ioannou

The Ministry of Interior, following a decision taken today by the Council of Ministers, is proceeding with the granting of financial aid as a favour for the relief of those affected by the recent fires in the communities of Polemi, Psathi, Choulou and Lemona in Paphos District on 11 June 2024 and in the community of Farmakas in Nicosia District on 16 June 2024.

In a statement after the Council of Ministers, Interior Minister Constantinos Ioannou said that the deadline for submitting applications to the relevant Paphos and Nicosia District Administrations was set for Wednesday, June 26, 2024. "So far, damage has been recorded to 23 houses in Paphos District, of which three are rented and one unfinished, a photovoltaic park, a car buying and selling business, two agricultural warehouses and a church, with a preliminary estimate of around €700.He said.

In relation to the fire in the Farmaka community, so far, the Minister said, damage has been recorded to four outbuildings and one vehicle, without a preliminary assessment of the damage having been completed.

"Compensation will be made on the basis of previous relevant decisions."

"Compensation will be made on the basis of previous relevant decisions. For example, the first €10,000 will be compensated at 100% and then on a pro rata basis. Taking into account the government's policy to support the countryside and the finding that a number of premises do not have the relevant licenses and with a view to complying with the relevant legislation, the recommendation was approved to grant the right to owners of unlicensed premises to apply to the Council for the Study of Derogations (SYMEPA) to study the possibility of exceptional licensing in order to be able to claim financial assistance," Ioannou said. Therefore, he said, they can apply to SYMEPA and those who are approved by exception will be eligible for financial assistance. "In the event that the applicant fails to secure a permit from SYMEPA, but is granted a permit for the construction of a shelter on another parcel of land, then the applicant is entitled to receive compensation up to the remaining 70% of the relevant approved assistance," he pointed out.

Finally, asked to say when the claims will be examined and the financial assistance will be paid to the affected people, Mr. Ioannou said that the claims are already being examined by a three-member committee, while an Appeals Committee has been set up.

Finally, asked to say when the claims will be examined and the financial assistance will be paid to the affected people, Mr. Ioannou said that the claims are already being examined by a three-member committee, while an Appeals Committee has been set up. Once the submission and examination of claims is completed, the payment of aid will proceed immediately, he said. "The important thing is the provision we have included for unlicensed ones, although so far only one has been recorded because the owners were absent. It is now possible to license them through SYMEPA and compensate them," the Interior Minister reiterated.
