Yesterday, the Deputy Minister of State for European Affairs Marilena Raouna had a telephone conversation with the Deputy Prime Minister, responsible for European assimilation and Chief Negotiator with the European Union Cristina Gherasimov.

During their conversation, Ms Rauna and Ms Gherasimov confirmed the friendly relations between the two countries and referred to their mutual will to further strengthen them, including in the context of promoting Moldova's European course.

Ms Gherasimov welcomed the decision of the European Council of December 2023 to open accession negotiations with the Republic of Moldova. She also informed about the establishment in Chisinau of an Office for the European assimilation of the country, as well as about the actions of the Moldovan Government to promote the reform process on the basis of the relevant recommendations of the European Commission. Prime Minister also expressed the hope for an early conclusion of the consultations within the Council on the Negotiating Framework, with the aim of holding an Intergovernmental Conference for the formal opening of accession negotiations with the EU.

Mrs Raouna said that Cyprus supports the EU's enlargement policy, which is a geopolitical necessity and is based on the principle of fair and strict conditionality. In this context, the Deputy Minister commended the Moldovan side for the progress it has achieved in promoting reforms, stressing the importance of continuing progress in the implementation of the necessary reforms. She also conveyed the readiness of the Republic of Cyprus to provide, if necessary, technical and other support to the Moldovan Government.

In conclusion, Ms. Gherasimov thanked Cyprus for its support to the efforts of the Moldovan Government and reaffirmed its commitment to the country's reform path.
