[PIO] Technical support from the International Labour Organisation for wages and pensions

The Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Mr.Yannis Panayiotou, on the sidelines of the General Conference of the International Labour Organization (ILO) in Geneva, held meetings with experts of the Organization on wages and pensions, as well as with the leaderships of international organizations of employers and workers.

During the meetings between the Minister of Labour and ILO officials, it was agreed to provide technical support to strengthen the adequacy of wages and ensure decent pensions, within the framework of people-centred government policy and European guidelines. In particular, good practices regarding the strengthening of social dialogue, the extension of collective agreements, the setting of minimum wages and the future of the institution of automatic indexation were discussed, while particular emphasis was placed on the promotion of pension reform in line with international experience and examples from other countries.

At the same time, the Minister met with the Director General of the International Organisation of Employers (IOE), Mr Roberto Suárez Santos, accompanied by the Director General of the Federation of Employers & Industrialists (OEB), Mr Michael Antoniou, and with the General Secretary of the International Trade Union Confederation (ITUC), Mr. Luc Triangle, accompanied by the General Secretary of the ITUC, Mr. Andreas Matsa, where they discussed the international challenges and prospects for the present and future of the labour market, in the context of tripartite social cooperation.

The Minister of Labour and Social Security made the following statements: "In order to rebuild trust in the public, in political institutions and political processes, it is necessary to implement our goals of strengthening the adequacy of wages and ensuring decent pensions, for more social justice in the daily lives of citizens. To this end, we are making substantial use of the expertise and know-how of the International Labour Organization, and I am optimistic about the results of government policy, in line with the President's Governance Programme."
