The following agreements were signed today, 15 May 2024, in Nicosia, between the Republic of Cyprus and the Swiss Confederation:
(a) Agreement for the construction of a building for rare diseases, which provides for a contribution of CHF 2.0 million (approximately €2.1 million). The grant will cover the costs for the construction of a specialized centre for rare diseases, which will provide holistic, comprehensive psychosocial support and disease management to people living with rare diseases and their families.
(b) Agreement for the operation of a voluntary return centre of the International Organization for Migration (IOM) Greece in cooperation with the Cyprus Population and Migration Registry Department. The agreement provides for a contribution of CHF 1.05 million (approximately €1.1 million). The grant will contribute to the development of accommodation infrastructure for asylum seekers wishing to return to their countries of origin. Mr. Andreas Zachariadis, Director General of the General Directorate for Development of the Ministry of Finance and Mr. Christoph Burgener, Ambassador of the Swiss Confederation to Cyprus.
The agreements are part of the two Framework Agreements signed between the two countries. One is aimed at reducing economic and social disparities in the European Union for the amount of CHF 5.2 million (approximately €5.4 million), while the second Framework Agreement of CHF 10.0 million (approximately €10.4 million) provides for the support of measures in the field of migration. These grants are provided under the Second Swiss Contribution 2019-2029 and additional funds for the Migration sector are expected to be made available soon.
