Revised support plans for stranded farmers were approved by the Council of Ministers at its meeting today, following a proposal submitted by the Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, as part of the Government's ongoing support to our rural world and especially to our stranded farmers. The support schemes concern existing, new and resettled stranded farmers, as well as stranded fishermen and agro-industrialists who, due to special circumstances, face difficulties in carrying out their activities.

The first scheme providing annual financial assistance to stranded farmers was implemented in 1996, while in 2017, a second scheme added new categories of stranded farmers, bringing the total annual budget to 950 thousand euros. Seeing the need for further revision of the plans, the Department of Agriculture, in cooperation with the Office of the relevant Commissioner for the Presidency, carried out an extensive consultation with the community leaders of our occupied villages where stranded people live, as well as with all stakeholders. The result of these consultations was the adoption and outline of specific modifications to the new plans approved today by the Council of Ministers, in order to make them even more useful and effective in relation to the purpose they serve. The agreed differentiations mainly concern a revision of the age limits and the amounts that beneficiaries in each category can receive, as well as changes to the application process and the status of the land under cultivation.
