[PIO] Submission of the 2024 State Budget to the House of Representatives

The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Mrs Anita Demetriou, received today the Minister of Finance, Mr Makis Kerynos, who presented the state budget for the fiscal year 2024 and the Medium Term Financial Framework (MTF) 2024-2026 for submission to the House of Representatives.

According to the Finance Minister, both the State Budget for 2024 and the MTBF 2024-2026 are based on the parameters of maintaining a surplus fiscal balance, containing public sector employment, reducing public debt in the medium term, promoting green transition and digital transformation, creating sustainable growth in key sectors of the economy and maintaining a robust financial system.

As highlighted by the minister in charge, capital expenditure is increased for 2024 by 12% compared to 2023, while an increase of 15.3% in spending on social benefits is also foreseen for the same period. There is also a downward trend in government debt as a percentage of GDP to 72.9% at the end of 2024, compared to 80.9% in 2023. The state budget for the year 2024, which provides for primary expenditure of €9,660.47, will be submitted to Parliament on Thursday, 5 October 2023 and, according to the President of Parliament, its discussion by the relevant committee will begin immediately, with the aim of completing the procedures and submitting it with a report to the body for approval and enactment into law within the constitutional framework, i.e. before the beginning of the year to which it relates.
