The decision to strengthen the Parental Care Programme nationwide with a total of four additional Social Service Officers was announced by the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Ms Marilena Evangelou before the Parliamentary Committee on Human Rights.

As Ms Evangelou said, the reinforcement is currently possible following the recruitment of five new Social Services Officers.

Parental alienation is a sensitive social problem because it affects children, the Deputy Minister said, adding that management is always focused not on the conflict between parents, but on the protection and best interests of the child.

Management, she said, is multidisciplinary, involving not only Social Welfare Services (SSS) but also other services and authorities.

Ms. Evangelou informed the Committee of the suggestion by the HCAs, as part of the consultation on the revision of the Ministry of Justice and Public Order's Parent and Child Relations Legislation, that multidisciplinary management begins immediately after the finding of alienation by court order, so that the involvement of both the services involved and the family is binding.

He also informed about the preparation of a protocol of actions between all the agencies involved, i.e. the MPS, Police and Mental Health Services, by the MPS to deal with cases of disobedience of parental orders, which will be forwarded to the relevant agencies for consultation and final agreement.
