The Turkish Foreign Minister is attempting to create false impressions in order to serve his own purposes, President of the Republic Nicos Christodoulides said tonight.
Speaking to reporters in Mosfiloti, on his way to the unveiling of a memorial to the fallen of 1974, and asked to comment on Turkish media reports of "harsh rhetoric" by the Greek Foreign Minister who supported Cyprus, the President of the Republic said: "If there is anyone who uses harsh rhetoric, it is the Turkish Foreign Minister with his statements, with which he attempts to create false impressions in order to serve his own purposes and his own weaknesses in relation to the role of Cyprus and Greece.
Cyprus is a centre of operations for the provision of humanitarian aid - this is proven every day - but also for the evacuation of civilians from the region. We have done so in the past. Hopefully the need will not arise, but if the need arises, we will still meet this humanitarian obligation.
We see our role in the region - in fact, unlike Turkey, and the statements made by Mr Fidan show this - the Republic of Cyprus is not only the closest European Union (EU) state in the region, but it is the only country in the region that maintains excellent relations with all neighbouring states, which is not the case with Turkey. And it is not only the case with Israel, it is also the case with many Arab states."
