A plan to cover the travel, accommodation and food expenses of subsidised patients sent abroad for treatment and a companion was approved today by the Council of Ministers.
In a statement after the Cabinet meeting, Health Minister Michael Damianos expressed his satisfaction with the approval of the proposal, noting that it concerns a long-standing and fair request of patients, which the Nicos Christodoulides government has fulfilled.
The plan will cover the cost of air tickets for patients and a companion, as well as the cost of accommodation and food during their stay abroad.
The subsidy for air tickets and accommodation/food for a companion is covered provided that in the calendar year preceding the year in which the patient went abroad for treatment, the annual gross income of the patient's family, or of the patient himself in the case of a person without dependants, does not exceed €100,000. In cases where the patient is a dependent child, the subsidy for air tickets and accommodation/boarding of a companion is covered, regardless of income criteria.
The plan as mentioned by the Minister comes into force on Tuesday 19 March and will cost around €4.5 million. The cost, he concluded, has been calculated based on the average number of patients going abroad per year.
