The problem concerning the shortage of [TWO] specific pharmaceutical preparations has been resolved, Health Minister Michael Damianos said.
In his statements, made on the sidelines of the inauguration of the Blood Dialysis Centre at the private hospital "Agios Georgios" in Paphos, the Health Minister said that he had, yesterday, been in contact with the Deputy Minister of Health of Greece, Mr. Marios Themistocleous, on the specific issue. "We expect some development today and early next week," Damianos said.
Furthermore, he noted that Cyprus, as a small country, is not considered attractive for the purchase of medicines, which causes shortages and price differences. He explained that this is a common problem for all small countries of the European Union (EU) and a collective effort is needed at the European level to find solutions to issues of drug sufficiency and pricing.
Asked about the 48-hour strike announced by pharmacists at the Limassol General Hospital, Mr Damianos had stated this morning that the aim is to maintain industrial peace. He also said that information on the issue had been requested from the State Health Services Organisation (SHSO).
In response to another question, the Health Minister explained that the Ministry of Health exercises a supervisory role and does not replace the SHSO. The Ministry of Health, he added, would intervene as a mediator where necessary, both with government doctors' guilds and other groups, to resolve problems. Issues should be resolved through dialogue and not require the ministry's intervention, he said.
