The Minister of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth, Mr Prodromos Prodromou, made statements today at the Presidential Palace, following the meeting of the Council of Ministers.
Specifically, Mr Prodromou said:
1. Following a proposal by the Ministry of Education, Culture, Sports and Youth (MPEAN), the Council of Ministers approved the equivalence of the rest and sick leave provided for teachers employed on an indefinite contract with the leave of permanent public education officials on the basis of the Public Education Service (Granting of Leave) Regulations of 1993 to 2016. The decision shall take effect from 1 September 2021.
2. The Council of Ministers approved a Proposal of the Ministry of Education and Science for amendments to the Law on the Conduct of the Pancyprian Entrance Examinations to Higher and Higher Educational Institutions (HEIs) of Cyprus and Greece. Specifically, the amendments necessary to adjust the timetables and other relevant provisions, in accordance with previous decisions taken and approved by the Parliament on: (a) the separation from 2021-22 of exit and university entrance examinations and (b) the implementation of the existing legislation on student assessment, were approved.
3. A proposal by the Minister of Education to encourage and financially support universities to participate in European University Networks was adopted by the Council of Ministers. In order to support both public and private universities participating in European university networks, it was decided to provide one-off support of up to EUR 100,000 for each university that secures participation in a European university cooperation scheme. With this Decision, the Government wants to encourage the extroversion and internationalisation of university education and in particular European cooperation in the field of university education and research.
