The strong diplomatic mobilization for the Amalthea project reflects the political and technical recognition of our initiative, as well as its strategic character, said today Government Spokesman Mr. Constantinos Letibiotis.
In his remarks to journalists at his media briefing at the Presidential Palace, the Spokesman said: "This morning, United States Central Command personnel supporting the humanitarian mission to provide additional humanitarian assistance to the civilian population in Gaza anchored at the temporary pier on Gaza Beach.
The operational readiness of the temporary floating pier in the Strip, constructed by the United States of America (US), will catalyze the creation of appropriate conditions to receive, receive and deliver larger volumes of additional and supplemental emergency humanitarian assistance.
In this context, the US ship James A. Loux (LSV-6) departed yesterday, carrying cargoes of humanitarian aid (British/166 pallets/temporary shelter items), as well as logistical support equipment for unloading and transporting the aid to be sent to the pier.
In addition, new departures are expected with humanitarian aid shipments of food, medical, sanitation and temporary shelter items.
These first maritime shipments, together with humanitarian shipments already off Gaza in watercraft sent in previous days by the US and the United Arab Emirates (UAE), will form part of the humanitarian aid that will begin to be unloaded - always bearing in mind that appropriate weather conditions must be met - for final distribution to civilians by appropriate contractors.
Part of this aid, which will be sent in the coming days, will also be of Cypriot origin, initially with 97 pallets of food items, with more to follow later for this purpose.
Trucks carrying humanitarian aid are expected to start moving ashore in the coming days. The United Nations will receive the aid and coordinate its distribution in Gaza.
The implementation of the Amalthea Plan in close coordination with our partners continues, with the key objective of providing additional, sustainable and safe humanitarian assistance to the civilian population of Gaza, who are in dire need of it.
The strong diplomatic mobilization throughout this period, with continued contacts and a series of visits by officials from our partners and stakeholders, reflects the political and technical recognition of our initiative, as well as its strategic nature. The action of the Mediterranean Parliamentary Assembly (MPA), which, in the context of this year's annual awards to personalities and organisations whose actions contribute substantially to the achievement of the objectives of the Assembly, awarded the Minister of Foreign Affairs, Mr. Constantinos Combos, in recognition of the initiative of the Republic of Cyprus to create a maritime corridor for the dispatch of humanitarian aid to Gaza, through the implementation of the Amalthea Plan, is also relevant.
Consequently, the Republic of Cyprus' matrix of leadership actions and its role as a hub of security and stability is constantly being reaffirmed.
To this end, I convey what Vice Admiral Cooper underlined most emphatically about the role of Cyprus during the US Government's briefing to journalists on the operationalization of the Gaza interim pier, in which he expressed the US Government's thanks to the Republic of Cyprus "for its leadership and support of this operation, which would not have been possible without these efforts of the Republic of Cyprus." The Vice Admiral added that "there is excellent, horizontal coordination with all international partners, which is made possible because of Cyprus."
