It is important that the Greek Government not only supports the efforts for the resumption of negotiations but also assumes a leading role, always with unsatisfactory coordination between Athens and Nicosia, President of the Republic Mr. Nicos Christodoulides.
In his statements to journalists, while attending an event at the former BMH, the President of the Republic, asked about the visit of the German President, said: "I consider the first historic visit of the President of Germany to Cyprus very important.
We had an excellent discussion both at the level of delegations and during our private meeting, a discussion that will continue today, we have a lunch with the German President.
In particular, the discussions focused on three issues. The first is about the Cyprus problem and how Germany can help substantially, not just through statements, and in this direction we exchanged some views, which cannot be made public, we are clearly much more interested in the outcome.
The second is the developments in the region for which the international community, and I am referring more to the European Union (EU), since Germany is also one of the strong EU member states, should as soon as possible proceed to provide humanitarian aid.
The third is about the future of the This year there are elections for members of the European Parliament, we will have new Presidents of the institutions, we will have elections in the United States. There is an ever-changing international environment and as the EU we should seek to play a leading role in all of this, and we exchanged some specific views. This dialogue will continue. The German President was Foreign Minister, he knows very well the issues of international interest, and our discussion will continue today."
Asked to refer to the meeting of the Greek Foreign Minister with the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN), the President of the Republic said: "It is important that the Greek Government not only supports the efforts for the resumption of negotiations, but also assumes a leading role which we welcome, always with unsatisfactory coordination between Athens and Nicosia, and the effort continues.
We are expecting the UN Secretary General's personal envoy in Cyprus in the second half of the month and we hope to create facts in the direction I have mentioned.
One option is the resumption of talks on the basis of the agreed framework, building on the acquis of the negotiations."
Asked if there was any communication with the Greek Government about the meeting, President Christodoulides said: "There is continuous communication and coordination with the Greek Government, both before and after the meeting."
Asked to comment on a Daily Express report, the President said: "We are following all the reports, many times we have seen similar reports in the past. Our Diplomatic Mission in London is investigating the matter, and whatever needs to be done through diplomatic channels you can be assured that it is being done."
