The Republic of Cyprus is not involved in any way in the military conflicts, President Nicos Christodoulides said tonight, noting that the Republic of Cyprus is part of the solution and not part of the problem.
In his remarks to journalists on the sidelines of the graduation ceremony of the University of Cyprus, asked to comment on today's statements by Lebanese Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah and the threats he made against Cyprus, the President of the Republic said: "I have read the statements that have been made.
What I have to answer is that the Republic of Cyprus is not involved in any way in the military conflicts.
The Republic of Cyprus is not part of the problem. The Republic of Cyprus is part of the solution. And our role, as manifested, for example, through the humanitarian corridor, is recognized not only by the Arab world, but by the entire international community.
So, I repeat, Cyprus, our country, is not involved in any way and is not part of the problem. On the contrary, through concrete actions we are demonstrating in practice that we are part of the solution."
Asked if there is still a channel of communication, either with Hezbollah or with the Lebanese Government, the President of the Republic said: "Of course there is a channel of communication with both the Government of Lebanon and the Government in Iran. There is a channel of communication through diplomatic channels."
Asked if he is concerned about Hassan Nasrallah's statements, the President said: "The statements are not pleasant, but they do not correspond in any way to what is being attempted, to present an image that Cyprus is involved in military operations. In no way whatsoever."
Asked if he would be in touch with foreign leaders about these statements by the head of Hezbollah, the President replied. But, I repeat, what the Republic of Cyprus does is public, it is not in secret. The Republic of Cyprus is part of the solution and not part of the problem."
