The President of the Hellenic Republic, Mr Nicos Christodoulides, attending the opening of an exhibition entitled "The Road to Paris", made statements to journalists.
Asked to comment on the need to convene an extraordinary National Council after the meeting with Mrs. Holguín, the President of the Republic said the following: "I read various things. We are trying to interpret them. We expect a National Council to be held. We are moving in the right direction and the Secretary General (SG) and the Personal Envoy are moving in the right direction with a single objective, the resumption of talks. I said that we had a very specific discussion on the various aspects of the Cyprus problem. I feel the need to inform the National Council. It should not become an issue."
And he added: "I listen to criticism when there is no council, I listen to criticism when I decide to do. Expect on Friday I will brief all the leaders. I will discuss with them and see how we move forward. Certainly both the SG and the personal envoy are committed to the resumption of substantive talks and in this effort we are their allies."
Asked whether this meeting discussed only procedural issues or substantive aspects of the Cyprus problem, the President said: "We did not only talk about issues of a procedural nature. We talked more about substantive issues. You understand, of course, that when we talk about the Cyprus problem, the process and the substance are equally important. So we talked about procedural matters, but we talked more about substance."
In response to a journalist's remark that next September is seen as the next milestone for a possible trilateral meeting and asked whether any move on the part of Ms. Holguín for a meeting is expected or whether it is considered a "dead" time, President Christodoulides noted: "There is no 'dead' time. Even if there are no official meetings, work is being done. Certainly if, for example, we consider September to be a milestone - which is logical, every September is a milestone - for September to be effective, the groundwork has to be done. So there is no dead time on the Cyprus problem, neither from the personal envoy nor much more from our side."
Asked to comment on the fact that Turkey continues in the same pattern, President Christodoulides said: "I listen to the public statements. I am not going to engage in a game of public confrontation I am not [HERE] for that. We are not here to achieve any communication goals. We are interested in the substance, and the substance is the resumption of talks. And considering the effort of the United Nations (UN), that is where we will all be judged."
Asked to comment on reports from the occupied territories that the upcoming meeting on Monday between Mr Tatar and Ms Holguín will take place at the offices of the Pseudo-state's delegation in London, the President said: "I know that it will take place in London. I do not know where it will take place. It will be held in London, as Mrs Holguín informed me. I also read in the Turkish Cypriot press, before Mrs Holguín informed me, that it will take place on 1 July."
In response to a question on the issue of the Mya Milia barrier, the President of the Republic said the following: "I have long since submitted a written proposal to the UN through Ms. Holguín in relation to roadblocks and, unfortunately, there has been no positive response from Mr. Tatar. If he really wished to open this particular roadblock, I can tell you that it could have been done last month. We also have proposals, which, I repeat, we submitted in writing, not through public statements, because we are serious. The management of the Cyprus problem requires seriousness, and unfortunately there has been no response."
