"The personal envoy of the United Nations (UN) Secretary General (UNSG) can help us in the effort to resume talks and we are here to work together in order to achieve this goal," President of the Republic Mr. Nicos Christodoulides, while welcoming the renewal of the mandate of the United Nations Peacekeeping Force in Cyprus (UNFICYP) by the United Nations (UN) Security Council (UNSC).
In his statements to journalists, while attending an event of the Cyprus Army Officers Association in Corno and asked about the renewal of the mandate of UNFICYP by the UN Security Council, the President of the Republic said: "To welcome the decision of the UNSC, the unanimous decision of the UNSC.
To note in particular the reference to the form of solution of the Cyprus problem, it reaffirms all relevant resolutions in relation to the form of solution of the Cyprus problem.
To highlight the reference to the issue of the enclosed area of Varosha and the demand for the withdrawal of all actions that fall outside the framework of the relevant resolutions, as well as the clear reference to the actions of the Turkish occupying forces in Pyla.
I consider that the resolution has been adopted at a very important juncture.
Today I had the opportunity to meet with the Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary General, we had a very constructive discussion. I believe that, yes, it can help us in the effort to resume the talks and we are here to work together in order to achieve this goal."
Asked to comment on Turkish Cypriot leader Ersin Tatar's statements after his meeting with the UN Secretary General's personal envoy, who referred, inter alia, to sovereign equality and equal international status, the President of the Republic said: "The best answer to what Mr. Tatar mentioned is the UN resolution. The international community, itself, responds to what Mr. Tatar mentioned.
I am not going to engage in a blame game or blame game and so on, or to do a communicative management of the Cyprus problem.
I mentioned earlier that we welcome the resolution, we welcome the appointment of the personal envoy, I really think she can help us. We know what we want, we know how to achieve it, it was all we discussed today, and we are working with one single goal: ending the occupation and reuniting our country."
