Within the day there will be an update on the content of the meeting between the Greek Prime Minister and the Turkish President, President of the Republic Mr. Nikos Christodoulides.
In his statements to journalists after the trisagion ceremony held at the naval base "Evangelos Florakis" for the victims of the Mari explosion, the President of the Republic said: "I am here, first and foremost, on behalf of the State. As President of the Republic of Cyprus to apologize for the tragic mistakes made on the part of the State, for everything that should have been done and was not done and led to this tragedy.
At least their sacrifice should be a signpost for all of us who are in positions of responsibility, so that we are not led to such human tragedies again."
Asked if he had been informed about the meeting between Mitsotakis and Erdogan last night in New York, the President of the Republic said: "No, I have not been informed yet. What I can tell you is that before the meeting there was an understanding on all the messages that will be conveyed, and within the day I will be informed."
Asked to comment on a letter from the Speaker of the Parliament and President of DISY Ms. Anita Demetriou that saw the light of day yesterday, the President of the Republic said: "I respect the place where I am and the reason why we are here today. I will not go into details in relation to the content of the letter. Of course I will respond, as I respond to letters from members of the National Council. Let me just mention two things. Yesterday I was in Athens for a few hours. Fortunately, technology exists and I read the letter on the Internet, in the newspapers, on the relevant sites.
The second thing is, fortunately in the meetings of the National Council minutes are taken and more than two people participate. I wouldn't want to go into that. I have more to say, but out of respect, minimum respect because we are here today, I would not like at this stage to say more."
Asked if his comment referred to the fact that the letter was first published in the media, the President said: "I was in Athens for a few hours and I read it through the relevant notifications that "drop" from the sites to the newspapers."
Asked if he had any communication with the personal envoy of the UN Secretary General for the Cyprus problem, Ms María Ángela Holguín, the President of the Republic said: "I had an exchange of messages with Ms. Holguín, yes. We also look forward today to the meeting she will seek to have with the Turkish Foreign Minister, who is also in Washington, D.C., in the context of the NATO Summit."
