The President of the Republic Mr.Nicos Christodoulides today received the salute of the military parade held on the occasion of the national anniversary of the Independence of the Republic of Cyprus.
In his statements to journalists after the military parade, the President of the Republic said: "To congratulate before and above all those who participated in the parade, we are proud of all that we have seen.
Today we honour the memory of all those who fought for the Republic of Cyprus to exist, all those who in 1974 stood on the side of legality to confront the treasonous coup, all those who resisted the Turkish invasion.
63 years later, the most precious thing we have is the Republic of Cyprus and this Republic of Cyprus we will not only protect, but we will strengthen it even more, strengthening the economy, the institutions, the deterrent power of the Republic of Cyprus, all those power factors, its international standing, but above all we will work for the end of the occupation, for liberation, for the reunification of our homeland, on the basis of the agreed framework.
Despite the challenges, the difficulties, whatever problems we face in this effort, in no way are we turning away from the effort to reunify our homeland. We will do everything possible to achieve this goal and, together with our Turkish Cypriot compatriots, make full use of the prospects created through the reunification of the country, through a functioning state. Happy birthday to all, be well."
When asked, President Christodoulides said: "The presence of the President of the European Parliament sends clear messages that the Republic of Cyprus is not alone in this effort, we have the EU as a supporter. The EU is the strongest safeguard for all the Cypriot people, Greek Cypriots and Turkish Cypriots, and in this effort to resume talks from where they were interrupted in the summer of 2017, the EU is our strongest ally."
Asked about the issue of the appointment of an envoy of the UN Secretary General, the President said that processes are currently underway on the appointment and if it is accepted by the Turkish side, he said: "it will pave the way so that through a gradual approach all those facts can be created. From our side, there is a clear political will, a plan on how to reach the much-needed reunification of our country. So, let us be patient and see how things will develop in the coming days."
To another question he said: "The Republic of Cyprus is our common homeland. And certainly without the resolution of the Cyprus problem, the ones who are the losers are the Greek Cypriots and the Turkish Cypriots. We extend a hand of friendship to our Turkish Cypriot compatriots, to work together to reunite our homeland and to achieve what I mentioned before, to make full use of all that a reunified homeland, an EU member state, can offer us."
