The executive will examine why not everything that should have been done in the case of Thanasis has not been done since 2005, President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides said today, noting that he has been in contact with Thanasis' mother since he took office.

In his remarks to journalists, speaking at a DIKO event to mark the 20th anniversary of the Republic of Cyprus' accession to the European Union (EU), the President of the Republic, referring to the case of Thanasis, said: "It is a case from 2005. You can understand how many governments have passed since then. I do not want to refer publicly to my contact and meetings with Thanasis' mother from the first day I took office. It is not a matter that should touch the public debate.

The bottom line is different, the bottom line is that we have a decision. And from the executive side I want to assure you that we will do everything possible within our own powers to see why all these years, since 2005, this issue had not moved forward.

I am in contact personally with the mother myself, on a human level if you like, but also as an executive we will do what is necessary. Certainly the result is very important, but let us see why over the years what should have been done was not done."

Asked if he had spoken about the matter with the Attorney General, the President said: "We started this process, now it has started, and we have been led to this result. I have spoken with both the Attorney General and the Assistant Attorney General after the decision. I am sure they will study, as I have been conveyed, the outcome. But apart from the result that is there, we have to look at why since 2005, 19 years ago, possibly what should have been done has not been done."

Asked whether the Council of Ministers will appoint an independent criminal investigator, President Christodoulides replied. It is tragic, 19 years. So I would not rule out anything.

The Council of Ministers and I personally, from the first moment I took office, had a meeting - away from the spotlight, it is a tragic aspect that does not lend itself to communication or exploitation by anyone - with the mother. I met her, we had many telephone communications and, taking into account the decision, I do not rule out anything in relation to the next moves of the executive in the context of its powers."

Asked to refer to the issue of citizen security and the action of various factions given the incident the day before yesterday, the President said: "From the very first moment I have been in contact with the Minister of Justice about the incident you have reported. The people, the society must not only feel, but also live it every day, that they are safe and for such phenomena that we see, unfortunately, over time in our country, through actions taken, especially by the Police, there must be zero tolerance. This is not even a matter for discussion.
