All measures are being taken on the part of the Republic of Cyprus so that the sense of security of the residents of the areas adjacent to the buffer zone is not affected to any extent, President of the Republic Mr. Nikos Christodoulides, referring to the Turkish provocations in Deneia.
In his statements to journalists, arriving at the Technical University of Cyprus, Limassol, invited to refer to the new Turkish provocations in Deneia, where trenches are being opened, and asked how the Republic of Cyprus will react, the President of the Republic of Cyprus said: "I have been immediately informed of the Turkish action, I expect a note to be submitted tonight."
I have spoken to the President of the Community myself, I have contacted him to be informed. It is indeed a matter of works by the occupying forces outside the buffer zone, it is something about which we will take all necessary actions both in the United Nations and in the European Union.
We see this increasing trend on the part of the Turkish occupying forces, it was for this reason that I addressed the Secretary-General of the United Nations (UN).
What I conveyed to the President of the Community and I want to mention in my statements is that all measures are being taken on the part of the Republic of Cyprus so that the sense of security of the inhabitants of the areas adjacent to the buffer zone is not affected to any extent. It is something, I repeat, that we are constantly monitoring."
Asked whether the present challenge had been included in his letter to the UN Secretary General, the President of the Republic replied. Such moves are often made in Deneia within the buffer zone. I repeat, this one is outside the buffer zone, but it is reprehensible because it affects the situation in general."
Asked whether the Government had contacted the UN on this issue, the President replied, "Of course, both the UN and the EU, but also third countries that can help us deal with this situation."
Asked what we can expect from the efforts to resolve the Cyprus problem and from the UN Secretary General's envoy, given the provocativeness on the part of the occupying regime, the President said: "I fully understand your question and certainly such actions do not help towards the resumption of talks.
But at the same time they prove that the current status quo, which is unacceptable, is not static, unacceptable new fait accompli are constantly being created which further remove the prospect of a Cyprus settlement. So I am aware of the difficulties, the challenges, I fully understand them, but at the same time the only solution to all these problems that have been arising for 50 years from the continued occupation is the resolution of the Cyprus problem. And it is for this reason that, without ignoring the difficulties, we welcome the appointment (of the UN Secretary General's envoy), we expect her to visit Cyprus as soon as possible, so that we can see how the prospects are created for the resumption of the talks."
