The President of the Republic, Mr.Nikos Christodoulides, described as a very unpleasant development what is happening between the Legal and Audit Services, noting that the institutions must operate on the basis of the Constitution.
In his statements to journalists, while attending an EMU event in Nicosia, and asked to comment on what is taking place between the Legal Service and the Audit Service, the President of the Republic said: "This is a very unpleasant development. I expect the institutions, as the Cypriot people expect, to cooperate on the basis of the Constitution of the Republic of Cyprus. We represent institutions and we ought, I repeat, to cooperate on the basis of the Constitution of the Republic of Cyprus.
At this stage I do not want to say anything else on this issue."
And he added: "It is a very unpleasant development. These are not my feelings, they are the feelings of the Cypriot people and, I repeat, the institutions have to cooperate on the basis of the Constitution.
There is a Constitution. The country should and must function, that is what the citizens expect from all of us, on the basis of the Constitution."
In response to a journalist's remark that the German President is visiting Turkey today and asked what to expect in relation to the Cyprus problem, the President of the Republic said: "We have a visit by the German President to Turkey, we have visits by Mrs. Holguin to Paris, Brussels, Berlin, then to Cyprus. The two meetings I will have with her have already been set and we expect, on the basis of the European Council Conclusions linking developments in Euro-Turkish affairs with progress on Cyprus, to see in practice how things will develop. What I can say from our side is that we are ready, we hope there will be developments. We have a concrete plan on how to create a positive situation for everyone and hopefully we will come to what we are seeking, which is the resumption of the talks."
Asked what the next steps are regarding the migration issue, the President of the Republic said: "You are aware that during the European Council I formally requested that we start the discussion so that some areas in Syria are designated as safe, on the basis that they are safe areas, and we know that some areas are. I want to express my satisfaction that a number of Member States supported our position. I also note that there was no reaction or negative position on this issue.
Beyond that you know that on 2 May I will travel with the President of the European Commission to Lebanon.
It was an initiative of the Republic of Cyprus, another development in our holistic approach to address this issue, and it is something that we are very concerned about."
Asked when he will proceed with the appointment of a Deputy Minister of Immigration, the President of the Republic replied "immediately".
