Following the Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, 19 March 2024, where the purchase of two buses to serve the needs of those stranded in Rizokarpaso, Kormakitis and Karpasia was approved, the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Mr. Alexis Vafeadis made statements to the media.
Vafeadis said: "Following a request from the Head of Humanitarian Affairs for Missing and Trapped Persons in November 2023, we have considered the procurement of two new buses for the needs of those trapped in Kormakitis, Rizokarpaso and Karpasia. The Cabinet today has approved the purchase of two new 30-seat buses for Kormakitis and Karpasia, and 50-seat buses for Rizokarpaso. We expect these to be in service in 18 to 20 months and will serve the needs of our internally displaced persons for transport to and from hospitals in the free areas and for any other use that exists and arises in the communities. The need has arisen because the buses that we already have and operate have increased maintenance and repair costs, and the expenses that are needed now make them unaffordable. Therefore, we are moving forward with this replacement to have better resources available to them."
