A meeting was held today at the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works between the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works, Mr Alexis Vafeades, and representatives of the Cyprus Confederation of Disabled Persons (CY.S.O.A.), in the presence of the Deputy Minister of Social Welfare Ms Marilena Evangelou, the Director General of the Deputy Ministry of Social Welfare, the Director General of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works, as well as competent officials of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works.

After thanking the members of the CPSOA for their presence and the exchange of views, Mr. Vafeadis said that they listened attentively to the problems faced daily by people with disabilities in their daily travels. Today's meeting was considered important, as suggestions were also recorded on behalf of the CYSOA in terms of improving the infrastructure.

"It will help us a lot to improve our infrastructure, both passive, on roads and pavements, and special, on public transport, so that our society becomes more inclusive. To be able to actively participate in daily life and contribute", said Mr. Vafeadis, stressing that this two-way exchange of views and information will continue.

More specifically, Mr Vafeadis referred to the improvement of infrastructure for easier movement of people with disabilities, e.g. on pavements. The importance of accessibility in the workplace was particularly stressed, as this is the only way for people with disabilities to exercise their right to work and contribute to society. The aim of the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Works is to reduce travel time by public transport and improve timetables.

"We don't see things in the same way and that's why working with the CSO helps us to see the world as they live it. This will help us take steps to make our society more inclusive." Vafeadis said.

"There are actions, there are timelines. We are committed as a state that we will implement them," the Minister of Transport, Communications and Works concluded.
