"Significant acceleration in the payment of 87% of Social Security benefits"

The Minister of Labour and Social Insurance, Mr. Yannis Panayiotou, at a press conference held today, July 25, 2024, to present the improvement of the state's response to citizens through the timely payment of Social Insurance Fund benefits, said the following:

"The Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance is effectively implementing the President's Governance Programme and improving the State's responsiveness to citizens through the timely payment of Social Insurance Fund benefits to beneficiaries, workers and pensioners.

The methodical implementation of the government's planning brings about people-centred results that positively affect the daily lives of thousands of citizens, drastically addressing the months-long delays that have been points of negative reference over time.

The improvement in the responsiveness of the Ministry of Labour and Social Insurance to citizens is the result of the necessary political will, better administrative organisation, simplification of procedures, the use of technology and the dedication of the staff of the service to the objective of timely payment of all Social Insurance Fund benefits to beneficiaries.

Moreover, just as citizens must be consistent in their obligations to the state, the state must be consistent in its obligations to citizens. Particularly so when citizens are entitled to the payment of benefits secured through the consistent payment of insurance contributions.

According to the June 2024 data, compared to the June 2023 data, a significant improvement has been achieved in the response to citizens for the payment of benefits, which covers 87% of the claims submitted to the Social Insurance Fund, since of the 82,573 claims submitted in the first half of 2024, 71.606 applications relate to the statutory pension, childbirth allowance, maternity benefit, paternity benefit, unemployment benefit and sickness benefit.

In particular, timely payment of the statutory pension, childbirth allowance and maternity allowance has been achieved for all beneficiaries, since, for pensioners, the first payment is made within one month of the date of retirement and, for mothers, the first payment is made within one month of the date of childbirth.

In addition, the response has been significantly accelerated and the median time for processing applications for the payment of paternity allowance has been drastically reduced, with an acceleration of 63.3% and a reduction in the processing time from 4,4 months to 1.4 months for unemployment benefit, with an acceleration of 48.1% and a reduction in the processing time from 4.5 months to 1.3 months and for sickness benefit by 58.4% and a reduction in the processing time from 6.1 months to 2.1 months.

According to government planning, it is expected that in the second half of 2024, the response to citizens will be further improved and the timely payment of Social Insurance Fund benefits will be further expanded.

The Government's people-centred policy provides for the improvement of the quality of life of citizens and the Government's planning is being successfully implemented in this direction through the gradual improvement that is statistically reflected and observed on a daily basis.

Finally, I wish to congratulate and thank the Social Security Services, the management and staff at all levels, who consciously contribute to improving the State's response to citizens, demonstrating in practice the potential and prospects of the Public Service."
