Cyprus has many positive examples and good practices to offer, as we are one of the first countries that have adopted a Comprehensive Programme for Environmental Education and Education for Sustainable Development, this was stated today by the Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Dr Athena Michaelidou, at the MED9 Summit and the UNECE Forum on Education and Sustainable Development, taking place this weekend (27-28 June) in Limassol.

Specifically, Ms Michailidou, speaking to journalists said: "We have the pleasure of hosting in Cyprus two very big events related to Education for the Environment and Sustainable Development. We have the high-level forum of the United Nations Economic Commission for Europe, UNECE, on environmental issues and the importance of education for the environment, and we also have the MED9 meeting of the Ministers of Education of the Mediterranean countries of the EU. So the message is about the importance and role of education in sustainable development and the environment, and this is made more important through the role of young people. So we put special emphasis on the role of young people, who will be and are already the active citizens of today and especially of tomorrow, and through education we cultivate values, skills and competences for sustainable development.

As you know, Cyprus has many positive examples and good practices to give, as we are one of the first countries that have adopted a Comprehensive Programme for Environmental Education and Education for Sustainable Development across the whole spectrum of our education. We have already worked intensively in recent years, we have provided training for teachers, we have prepared relevant materials and these opportunities, such as these two days, give us the opportunity to exchange good practices with other countries, but above all to transfer our good experiences."
