The Minister of Education, Sports and Youth, Ms Athina Michaelidou, made statements to journalists today regarding a decision taken by the Council of Ministers on the achievement of the objectives of the Year of Youth 2024.
After the end of the session, Ms. Michaelidou in her statements to journalists said. "We have continued with the implementation of one of the other commitments of the European Commission, namely the proclamation of 2024 as the Year of Youth. We have therefore called on all Ministries and Deputy Ministries to undertake actions for young people.
The proclamation of 2024 as the National Year of Youth aims to give visibility to youth issues, to encourage the promotion of youth policies, to strengthen the participation of young people and their organisations in society and, in general, to empower youth.
The proclamation of 2024 as the National Year of Youth aims to give visibility to youth issues, to encourage the promotion of youth policies, to strengthen the participation of young people and their organisations in society and, in general, to empower youth.
In the framework of the Year of Youth for Cyprus, new initiatives will be developed and existing ones will be highlighted that support young people, their personal, social, economic and professional development in a green, digital and inclusive world. The activities will be in line with the objectives of the European Union's Youth Strategy 2019-2027, as well as the priorities of the Governance Programme. The design of activities and their implementation will be based on the principles of democracy, inclusiveness and active participation.
The main objectives of the Year of Youth, as decided today in the Council of Ministers, are: First, to promote democratic participation and active involvement of young people and their organisations in decision-making processes. Second, to improve policies affecting young people. Thirdly, strengthening the skills of young people to facilitate their integration into society and the labour market. Fourth, to create opportunities for entrepreneurship among young people. Fifth, the promotion of inclusion and equal opportunities and sixth, the strengthening of young people's mental health, which is also very high on the priorities of the European Union. The ONEK will coordinate the formulation of a National Action Plan that will include activities to be included in the Agency's activities. Activities, which will be implemented by the Ministries and State Services, as well as initiatives that will be agreed through consultation with young people and will be financially supported by the ONEK.
In addition, it will ensure the active participation and involvement of young people, youth organisations, civil society organisations and other relevant stakeholders in the formulation and implementation of the Year's activities, ensuring a cross-sectoral approach and horizontal cooperation.
Finally, it will support actions to publicise all of the above during the Year and will take the necessary measures to ensure the sustainability of the legacy of the Year for the benefit of youth.
To achieve the objectives of the European Year of Youth, it has been decided to set up a Steering Committee with an advisory role for the Youth Agency. This committee will include a representative of the Cyprus Youth Council, a representative of the Ministry of Education, Sports and Youth, a representative of the Foundation for the Management of European Lifelong Learning Programmes and the Citizens' Commissioner or his/her representative.
Consequently, today we had the ratification of the designation of the year 2024 as the Year of Youth for Cyprus, as well as of the Coordinator and the Advisory Committee. Thus, we are given the opportunities to act more catalytically in the field of youth in order to implement the objectives that we have in the Governance Programme and more broadly at European level."
In response to a question on when we will have something more tangible regarding the actions for the Year of Youth, Ms Michaelides noted: "The Youth Agency is already empowered as of today to bring a concrete action plan. That is why we have established 2024 as the Year of Youth. Within the next few weeks we will have a plan in our hands which will also be the product of consultation with all stakeholders."
