The Council of Ministers at its meeting today approved a proposal of the Ministry of Defence, which included measures to modernise the institution of Contracted Soldiers of the National Guard (SYOP) and upgrade their employment conditions.
One of the main objectives of the Government since the day it took office has been to strengthen the strength of the National Guard.
In order to make the institution of SYOPs more attractive and sustainable, I would like to summarise that the Council of Ministers has decided the following with regard to the SYOPs already serving. 1. For a number of SNEs serving in selected parts of the NF, the monthly allowance shall be set at EUR 200.
2. Number of SYOs, as per vacancies, after completion of 10 years of service will be eligible for employment with upgraded pay and with extension of the maximum age limit from 42 to 57 years. Those who wish to do so will be allowed to sit for a written examination and participate in a selection process. Their pay will be equivalent to that of pay scales A2-A5-A7(ii).
3. The arrangements relating to SYOs already serving shall take effect from 1 July 2024.
With regard to SYOs to be recruited in the future, the Council of Ministers has decided the following:
1. SYOPs will be hired in the future for a total service period of ten (10) years, with successive contracts from one (1) to three (3) years, following a selection procedure that will include a written examination.
2. The maximum age limit will be 27 years and the salary scale for recruitment will be equivalent to the annual basic salary of salary scale A2, to which will be added the general and indexed increases in force from time to time.
3. The special monthly allowance will be granted and there will be a possibility of extending the maximum age limit to 57 years for a number of SYOPs, with upgraded remuneration as applicable to those already in service.
4. An advertisement for recruitment of SYOPs will be issued once the legislative framework is finalized.
In conclusion, I would like to mention that the Ministry of Defence, with a view to maintaining the proper functioning, upgrading and modernization of the National Guard, listens to the needs, concerns and worries of our personnel and makes every effort to resolve or improve many issues of concern to them.
