The Attorney General of the Republic Mr. George Savvidis and the Assistant Attorney General of the Republic Mr. Savvas Angelides answered questions from media representatives at the lecture on: "Judicial review and procedural issues in competition law through the decisions of the EU courts", organized by the Academy of Legal Services at noon on Thursday 14 February 2024, in the auditorium of the Press and Information Office.

Asked by the Assistant Attorney General of the Republic whether there is any news in relation to the recent two attacks against Legal Service officials and whether the Police have made any arrests, Mr. Angelides replied that the Police are investigating both cases, with investigations continuing. As you know, he added, no arrests were made because the Police would announce it, while noting that "the issue is not arrests, but the goal is to bring the perpetrators to justice."

Asked to comment on a report in the Turkish Cypriot press regarding the arrest of Turkish Cypriot Akan Kioursiat by the authorities of the Republic and that it was unjust because there was insufficient evidence to substantiate the case, Angelides said. A procedure was followed to execute a European arrest warrant. It was executed with the defendant's consent and the case was registered before the court. Beyond that, the advancement of the case and whether it is unfair or not are not comments that are for the Legal Service.

For the purposes of registering the case, of course, there was evidence, which was updated. I just remind you, without in any way affecting the rights of the accused as well, that this was a case that was previously investigated and we had a conviction of a co-defendant in that case."

Asked about the topic of today's lecture, the Attorney General of the Republic, Mr. George Savides, said that "today the Academy of the Legal Service, as a continuation of its training programmes, is presenting a programme which deals with competition law. A subject that is very important both in Cyprus and at European level. We have the pleasure to host as a speaker the Judge of the General Court of the European Union, Mrs. Anna Markoullis, and we have the pleasure, in addition to the officials of our Service, to have in attendance judges of the Supreme Constitutional Court, judges of other courts of Cyprus, the President and members of the Competition Protection Committee, because an important pillar of the Legal Service Academy is not only the training of the officials of the Legal Service, it is also the training and the provision of training to other departments of the Legal Service.
