Government Spokesman Constantinos Letibiotis described the meeting held today by the President of the Republic Mr.
In his statements to journalists after the meeting, the Spokesman said: "Today's meeting was a follow-up to their first meeting, where the President of the Republic had the opportunity to discuss with the UN Secretary General's personal envoy the meetings he had with civil society, and to exchange views through a very constructive dialogue.
The President of the Republic highly appreciates the efforts made by Ms. Holguin in the process to create the conditions for the resumption of the negotiations from the point where they have been interrupted, and we look forward to the next visit of Ms. "This is something we will wait for her or the UN to announce."
Asked if the Government is more optimistic following Ms. Holguin's contacts, the Spokesman said: "These were the first informative meetings for her in Cyprus as well. Very important meetings will follow, both in Athens and in Ankara and in Brussels, and we look forward to her next visit to Cyprus, where the next steps in this effort to resume negotiations will now be discussed."
Asked if Ms. Holguin suggested a specific plan for the next steps, the Spokesman said: "There was an exchange of views following her meetings with civil society. We should look forward to the next meeting," while to another question he said that today "she briefed on the meetings she had with civil society as well, there was an exchange of views following the first meeting she had with the President of the Republic."
Asked whether she also briefed on her meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leader, given its importance, the Spokesman said: "All meetings are meaningful in this context, certainly the meeting she had with Mr. Tatar is meaningful and it was an important meeting. But the meetings that he will have in the coming period in Athens, Ankara and Brussels are also important."
Asked if common ground is beginning to emerge, the Spokesman said: "We are waiting. Our goal is to contribute in every way possible to create the conditions for the resumption of negotiations. We believe that if there is the same political will on the other side, this can be possible and very soon, from the point where they have been interrupted."
Asked if Ms. Holguin asked the President for anything specific, the Spokesman replied in the negative, adding that "it was a very constructive discussion."
