The need to further utilize our Diaspora in order to promote our positions on the Cyprus problem was expressed by the Government Spokesman, Mr.Konstantinos Letibiotis.

In his statements today to journalists, coming to the Conference of Cypriots in Diaspora, when asked, he said: "This year's World Congress of our Diaspora is the largest ever held.

We have experienced our remarkable expatriates who excel in either political or business affairs in their countries of residence.

Our goal as a government is to make the most of these people who are on the side of Cyprus, no matter how many years they have been away from their homeland.

My discussion with them will be about how we can use our expatriates to raise public awareness in their countries, to develop closer relations with the media as well, to promote our positions, our country, with the primary objective of promoting our national problem and our positions, for which the President of the Republic has made a very great diplomatic effort. It is obvious the benefits that can be obtained through the more active involvement of our Diaspora.

This afternoon the American Senator Mr. Robert Menendez, who has a very close relationship with the Diaspora and is a supporter of our struggles in Cyprus, will address the delegates. One of the key objectives is the systematic effort that our expatriate community in the US has made in further raising awareness of Mr. Menendez and many others who support us."

Asked about the situation in Pyla, the Spokesman said: "At this time, particularly since the unanimous statement of the United Nations Security Council, the status of the buffer zone and the unacceptability of the plans of the Turkish occupation regime have been clarified again. We are closely monitoring developments.

The President of the Republic, the Foreign Minister and the Government are in constant diplomatic contact. What will not be accepted is anything that calls into question the status of the buffer zone."

Asked about the visit of the UN Assistant Secretary-General to Cyprus, Mr. Miroslav Jenča, the Spokesman said that Mr. Jenča will be in Cyprus in view of the UN General Assembly.

He added that Mr. Jenča reported directly to the UN Secretary General and his visit "had been planned after the President of the Republic had telephoned Mr. Guterres, but also after the private meeting of Mr. Kobos with the UN Secretary General.

What we will make clear, once again, is our readiness to resume negotiations immediately on the basis of the agreed framework, our sincere will for constructive dialogue to resume negotiations from where they left off and our view, and we welcome that it is shared by the unanimous decision of the Security Council, that the appointment of an envoy by the Secretary-General will have a high added value, especially at this stage.
