Health Minister Dr. Popi Kanari, accompanied by the head of the Health Services of the Ministry of Health, Herodotus Herodotus, visited today the supermarkets Alfamega and Papantoniou, in Egomi, as part of the regular checks carried out by the Health Services.
In her statements, immediately after the completion of her visit to Alfamega supermarkets, the Health Minister noted that food inspection is a key pillar of prevention of the Ministry of Health, as through it, unsuitable food products are identified and withdrawn in a timely manner, in order to protect the Cypriot consumer. The controls, she explained, are carried out by the Health Services in cooperation with other departments, such as the State General Chemistry Department.
The Minister indicated that the control is carried out at all places of production, processing and sale. She noted that from 18 to 31 December, more than 500 checks will be carried out at various establishments, import, preparation and sales premises.
"Checks will also be carried out on New Year's Eve, so that seasonal products that may present a problem can be withdrawn in time," the Minister said.
Dr Kanari recalled that dried figs in which aflatoxins were present were recently detected. These, she added, were withdrawn from the market in time and did not reach consumers. He also said that other parameters, such as the unsuitability of the packaging, were also examined when carrying out checks. "The tests that are done are of a very high level," Dr Kanari said, stressing that the State General Chemistry Department has accredited laboratories, while controls are also carried out by the European Commission through a team visiting Cyprus. "The team checks whether we, the competent authorities, are exercising the right controls and ensuring the quality of what ends up on the consumer's plate. It must be said that Cyprus has been proving for years that it exercises proper control," the Health Minister said.
She concluded by saying that "the Cypriot consumer can feel safe. Cypriot officials teach lessons to other countries and prove that even small countries can take the lead in various areas."
Head of the Health Services of the Ministry of Health Herodotus Herodotou said that these days there is an increase in the control of food expected to be consumed during the holidays." He also said that nothing objectionable has been detected from the inspections carried out so far by the Health Services. Checks are also being carried out in pastry shops and bakeries, Mr Herodotus added. He added that officials of the Health Services have also carried out checks in the Christmas Villages. "I feel that the Health Services are doing everything they can to ensure that Cypriot consumers feel safe with what they consume," he concluded.
