Cyprus' request for the strengthening of CAP instruments and increased funding for the countryside and rural areas to make them attractive for young farmers
The first Council of Agriculture Ministers under the Hungarian Presidency, with an important topic on the agenda, that of the demographic revitalisation of the countryside. An issue which is of great concern to us, because we want to stem the exodus and abandonment of young people from the countryside, which we are obviously doing with a number of financial instruments, which fall within the framework of the implementation of the governance programme. We have explained that this cannot happen only from national resources. We need the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) to be supported by other financial instruments, which will allow rural and mountainous areas to become an attraction for young and young farmers, for young families, so that small and medium-sized production in rural areas can be sustainable and of course be competitive, because we know that many of these areas have an increased cost of moving products. So what we have asked, what we have put forward, is that the CAP should be supported by other financial instruments that can allow for the creation of a range of infrastructure so that our countryside can be revitalised, as I have said, and become an attraction for young farmers and young farmers.
