Today's approval by the House of Representatives of the "Gender Equality Commissioner and Related Matters Act of 2024" is a milestone in the multi-level effort we are making in cooperation with the Ministries and Deputy Ministries, social partners and the wider civil society, with the aim of achieving full and effective equality between women and men. The institutionalization is also a continuation of the efforts of the National Women's Rights Mechanism (NWRM) to ensure women's rights.
The Law establishes the respective Gender Equality Commissioner and defines his/her role and responsibilities, including the formulation, coordination and evaluation of the implementation of the National Strategy for Gender Equality in cooperation with the Ministries and Deputy Ministries. As of today, we have another very important tool at our disposal to further integrate the gender dimension in order to establish gender equality in all aspects of life.
The new Law also regulates the role of Gender Equality Officers in Ministries and Deputy Ministries and defines their assistance in the horizontal integration of the gender dimension in public policies. At the same time, the EMDG is established, which is an evolution of the Central Body for Women created in 1989, as well as the Advisory Body established under the same name in 1994, by a decision of the Council of Ministers, and the way it operates and cooperates with the Office of the Gender Equality Commissioner is defined.
The upgrading of the Gender Equality Commissioner is a priority of the President of the Republic and his administration. The Law approved today by the House of Representatives is the culmination of efforts to consolidate the culture of gender equality, and I am therefore particularly pleased.
Finally, I would like to thank the Ministry of Justice and Public Order, the Commissioner for Legislation, the NEC and the Chairman and Members of the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs, Justice and Public Order for their excellent cooperation and substantial contribution, which resulted in the adoption of this important law.
