Today our discussions in the Council revolved around three important issues.
In the area of criminal law, the 27 agreed on our position which will form the basis of our negotiations with the European Parliament on the adoption of the Regulation on the transfer of criminal proceedings. This is an important piece of legislation which will give us more tools to tackle impunity and fight crime more effectively with a cross-border dimension while ensuring respect for both fundamental rights and the individual national systems of Member States.
We also discussed how we can improve the relationship between our national authorities and the European Public Prosecutor's Office, which is important in the fight against crimes affecting financial interests. Two and a half years after the start of its operational activity and having now gained practical experience, we should carry out reviews in order to identify gaps and shortcomings and correct them.
Regarding criminal law and human rights, we exchanged views on a very important legislative proposal to revise the existing Directive aimed at strengthening the rights of victims of crime, such as effective procedures for victims' access to compensation as well as the creation of a European Court of Human Rights.
