Today is a landmark day for our country. I welcome the passage by the House of Representatives of the bill establishing the Deputy Ministry of Immigration, which lays the groundwork for a more effective response to the migration issue.

The consolidation of services under the umbrella of a single Deputy Ministry will have substantial and practical benefits in terms of planning, coordination and oversight of the relevant government agencies. We expect that the improved picture, as a result of the targeted measures implemented over the past year, will be further enhanced with the operation of the new Deputy Ministry.

The decrease in arrivals, especially of African nationals via the Green Line, but also the large increase in returns, reversed the negative picture and now our country ranks first among the 27 Member States of the European Union in the percentage of departures over arrivals.

I would like to take this opportunity to convey the Government's sincere thanks to all Members of Parliament for their responsible, consensual and serious attitude throughout the debate on the final text. I am confident that the excellent cooperation that has been developed with the Ministry of Interior on immigration issues will continue with the responsible State Ministry of Immigration in the same constructive spirit.

Allow me also to thank my colleagues at the Ministry of Interior, the Civil Registry and Migration Department and the Asylum Service, who have worked intensively and tirelessly to ensure the success of this arduous undertaking.

Migration is a complex issue with international dimensions, which is influenced by external factors that require constant vigilance and preparedness. Undoubtedly, the Government's targeted policy will continue with the same seriousness and determination, with the contribution and guidance of the European family. I wish every success to the Deputy Minister who will take over the reins of the Ministry of State and his team in the difficult task ahead of them.
