As you know, since about 1900, when rainfall data were recorded, Cyprus is experiencing its 10th worst year of rainfall.
Given that we are experiencing a prolonged period of drought, the Council of Ministers has approved measures to address the drought and the challenges it poses for both water supply and irrigation purposes to support the primary sector.
The measures, totalling €6,065,000, include.Exploitation of boreholes for the months of July - December 2024 in order to enhance the water balance for the benefit of farmers.
2.Treatment of brackish water aquifer by installing 5 water treatment systems for irrigation.
3.Reduction of network losses and water wastage in collaboration with EOA and Water Utilities.
4.Strengthen legislation to reduce uncontrolled water use and waste, with increased penalties and improved enforcement.
5.Subsidise the installation of small private seawater treatment plants for irrigation by farmers and producer groups
6.Support restoration of community water supply to meet emergency water supply needs due to drought
7.Intensify public education and awareness campaign to reduce water consumption
8.Subsidize investments related to smart irrigation systems to save water
9.Improvement of Irrigation Department infrastructure and reduction of losses
10. In addition to the above, the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment will also provide targeted training programme to farmers on rational water management and will use all available tools related to adverse climate events to support farmers.
In order to finally solve the problem of water scarcity and drought in Cyprus, the Ministry is proceeding, in parallel, with the Review of the Strategic Study on Water Management and Drought Response.
