The Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment, Dr Maria Panayiotou, after the Cabinet meeting held today, Wednesday 17/07/2024, at the Presidential Palace, made the following statement: "As you know, in 2015, the suspension of the offer of the curriculum of the Cyprus Forestry College (CFC), as a consequence of the economic crisis, was one of the reasons that contributed to the understaffing and smooth operation of the Forestry Department (FD).
Having as a priority the protection and conservation of forests and the enhancement of the operational readiness of the Forestry Department, the Council of Ministers today approved the reopening of the Forestry College in January 2025 and the reintroduction of the "Advanced Diploma in Forestry" Programme by the Cyprus Forestry College (CFC) with the first students entering the Forestry College in September 2025.
The curriculum, which is for a Higher Diploma in Forestry, will be a three-year course and has been accredited by the relevant Higher Education Quality Assurance and Accreditation Body (HEQA) on 17/06/2024.
Also, the Cabinet approved the enrichment of the existing training programme of the DPC with new programmes, targeting Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs), communities, citizens, etc., on issues related to the environment and nature from January 2025.
I reiterate that the objective of the re-launch of the ICP programme is to strengthen the staffing of the Forestry Department, particularly in relation to forest fire management, while the enrichment of the training programme will provide an opportunity to train NGO and community representatives, but also citizens, government agencies, existing Forestry Department (FD) staff, etc."
