Opening of the debate, in principle, of the bill for the establishment of the Office of the Gender Equality Commissioner in the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs

Today is an important day for the long-standing struggle of women for equality and their rights. As part of the implementation of the Nicos Christodoulides Governance Programme, the Ministry of Justice and Public Order submitted and presented today before the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs the bill for the establishment of the Office of the Gender Equality Commissioner.

It is with great satisfaction that I noted in the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs a unanimous vote from the MPs, members of the National Mechanism for Women's Rights and other organizations. The importance of the institutionalization of the Gender Equality Commissioner was recognized by all, and most positive references were made to the provisions of the Bill.

I note that the Bill was widely consulted with all members of the National Women's Rights Mechanism and organizations and that most of their suggestions were adopted.

The Bill is expected to establish a Gender Equality Commissioner to accelerate efforts, in collaboration with all Ministries and Deputy Ministries, to strengthen and ensure equal rights for women and men, boys and girls.

It is also important to note that the adoption of the Bill is expected to establish the National Women's Rights Mechanism, a body that has been in operation since 1989. At the same time, the Commission for the Implementation of the National Gender Equality Strategy, consisting of gender equality officers from Ministries and Deputy Ministries, is being institutionalized.

The approval of the Bill is important for the promotion of gender equality, which will bring about a more equal, just and stronger society.

I express my thanks to the Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Legal Affairs, Mr. Nikos Tornaritis, and its members for their prompt response in promoting the Bill.
