The Council of Ministers, at its meeting today, decided, following a proposal by the Deputy Ministry of Culture, that the city of Cyprus, which will be selected as the "European Capital of Culture" for the year 2030, will receive a state contribution of €6.5 million
This amount will relate to operational costs and will cover up to 60% of the city's total budget in relation to these costs. Operational costs include the organisation of artistic events, promotion and publicity activities and costs related to the administrative costs of the event.
It should be noted that for the same purpose, in the context of the Capital of Culture 2017, a State contribution of €5 million was approved in 2011.The aim of the increase for the Capital of Culture 2030 is to enable the selected city to organise its action plan more effectively and to enrich it with quality cultural events. Therefore, the "Capital of Culture 2030" is very important for the Ministry of Culture, but also for the Government.
Winning the title will have a huge benefit for the place, but even more so for the winning city, as it will offer it recognition and visibility, prospects for economic growth and progress. It is also a means of highlighting our contemporary culture and the rich cultural heritage of our country.
As the late Melina Mercouri said, speaking about this institution, the idea is "that we need to get to know each other better, that we need to talk about culture and exchanges, that we have a cultural past and a cultural future, that we need to be united."
As the late Melina Mercouri said, speaking about this institution, the idea is "that we need to get to know each other better, that we need to talk about culture and exchanges, that we have a cultural past and a cultural future, that we need to be united. [...] Because culture is the best and most inclusive way to peace."
I am sure that, for the cities that choose to follow this path towards the title, the whole process will be a rich journey that will highlight the importance of culture in our lives and the essential role it plays in modern societies, the selected city will also receive the €1.5 million that accompanies the Melina Mercouri Prize. At the same time, cities have the opportunity to receive additional funding from the Community Structural Funds, mainly for actions that fall within the framework of urban development and social cohesion.
I would like to take this opportunity to inform you that the Ministry of Culture, as the Managing Authority of this institution, is organising an Information Day in order to provide the necessary information to representatives of cities interested in applying for the title "European Capital of Culture 2030". The Workshop will take place on Monday 29 January 2024 at 09:00 at the University of Cyprus (University Campus) and we invite all those interested to attend. More information about the conference can be found on the website of the Ministry of State.
