The first part of the 2022 session of the Parliamentary Assembly of the Council of Europe concludes today, 28 January 2022. Kostis Efstathiou delivered a speech during the debate held yesterday at the Plenary Session of the Assembly on the Council of Europe's Observatory on the Teaching of History.
Efstathiou said that the purpose of the Observatory is to collect information and exchange best practices among the participating member states of the Council of Europe, as well as to promote scientific synergies in the field of history teaching. The exchange of teaching methodologies through the Observatory and the promotion of dialogue and cooperation in this sensitive area strengthens social cohesion, especially for the benefit of the younger generations, he added.
Efstathiou also said that the Observatory can become a useful tool against the teaching of historical inaccuracies and unreliable narratives, as a result of biased and one-dimensional views or propaganda. The challenge, the Cypriot MEP stressed, is the added value of knowing history. He finally underlined the importance of more Member States of the Organization joining the Enlarged Partial Agreement establishing the Observatory on the Teaching of History, in order to jointly address the challenges in the teaching of history and for all Parties to benefit from related synergies and activities to be developed through their participation in the Observatory.
