25 May 2024 marks six years of application of the General Data Protection Regulation, which was established primarily to ensure the uniform application of data protection rules across the European Economic Area, but also to further strengthen citizens' rights. At the same time, this strong EU data protection framework has drastically increased the obligations of all those who process personal data and laid new foundations for effective and efficient cooperation between the Data Protection Supervisory Authorities.

In these six years of implementation of the Regulation, my Office has handled 2585 complaints, of which 746 related to spam, 494 breach notifications and 112 impact assessments. 506 checks were carried out, 299 Decisions were issued and administrative fines totalling €1,561,100 were imposed. In addition, my Office was consulted on 261 draft laws and legislative proposals relating to personal data and their processing. During these six (6) years, 2002 written questions from citizens and organisations have been answered directly, while hundreds of other questions have been answered after a short investigation.

The activities of the European Data Protection Board, which is the institution of the Supervisory Authorities, in this six-year period can be described as rich and guiding, as the Board has issued 48 Guidelines, six Recommendations, nine Binding Decisions and two Urgent Binding Decisions. The Board has also issued 197 Opinions and provided 10 Opinions jointly with the European Data Protection Supervisor.

25 May 2024 also marks one year since my election as Vice-Chair of the European Data Protection Board. This election marked a more active and substantial contribution to the work of the Board and to key decision making centres. I successfully chaired plenary sessions of the Board and its sub-groups, represented the Board at conferences and workshops and held contacts with other Supervisory Authorities, institutions and organisations to bring together different cultures and positions in order to ensure a coherent implementation of the Regulation for the benefit of citizens.

In addition to the above, my Office was extensively involved in the Board's sub-groups, took part in its coordinated actions and handled 105 cross-border processing cases.
